Born in Oregon, Susan Comerford has been a professional
artist for over30 years. She has gained knowledge both through work experience
and by means of formal education, attending the University of Nevada and then
the University of Oregon, from whom she earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree in
1983. During the years that Comerford was studying art she worked in related
fields. Sign painting and the large pictorials used on billboards were part of
that experience, as well as logo design, theater props, and murals. At this time
she is able to concentrate completely upon fine art, most particularly
landscapes in oil. Her work is influenced by the Impressionists, especially
Seurat and Monet.
Artist's Statement.......
My painting is Impressionistic in style. Many layered small brush strokes build
up the landscape and eventually form the essence of what I am expressing. I do
not attempt to be detailed, sometimes detail happens but it is not sought. A
painting should express the artists feeling about the subject and that emotion
will be, in a good painting, conveyed to the viewer.
Working in art has been my life. Without my artwork I would be without purpose.
And that purpose is to express as well as possible the meanings that I see and
feel in the visual world. I must express these things so well that the viewer
will be profoundly affected and realize a deep satisfaction and gain a new
knowledge of the landscape that opens the way to a deeper enjoyment of the world
around us.
