PRESS RELEASE/COMMUMITY NOTES:
THE HORSE, A NOBLE STEED
SHOW DATES:
Oct 2 – Nov 18, 2001.
Reception:
Saturday, Oct 13, 1
– 3 pm
Man has always loved horses. After all, the horse is the original
form of transportation, representing power and stature.
The artists of The Alder
Gallery, in Coburg, have been invited to create artworks with the
subject of the horse for the upcoming show: THE HORSE, A NOBLE STEED”.
Our show opens October 2nd and runs through Nov. 18th.
The opening reception with artists welcomes the public on
Saturday, October 13th, 1 – 3 pm.
Men and women have had a love affair with horses since we began
walking on two feet. Although wild in nature, horses often allow us to
think of them as tame. The experience of riding on the back of a wild
horse is one of elation, freedom and power.
On the back of these noble
creatures western civilization was established and is what is today.
With our trusty steed, we have been able to discover new lands and
cultures. The horse is a beast of burden that has allowed us to
cultivate the soil, move large and heavy objects, and helped build great
bridges and buildings. The
horse has been our best friend, getting us through hard times,
treacherous trails, and cold and lonely times.
The breath of a horse’s
ability has allowed it to be an animal of war, as well as a child’s
gentle friend. The
passionate relationship between child and horse has given children the
fantasy to fly and the courage to become our leaders.

ILLUSTRATIONS &
INSPIRATIONS: New ceramic figures by FRANK GOSAR are sure to
bring a smile of delight, and perhaps of recognition. Gosar, a
1988 Masters of Fine Art/ Ceramics graduate from the University of
Oregon, creates figurative sculptures inspired by books, by music, and
by his real life heroes. His work can be found in many collections
both locally and nationally.
You
may recognize Gosar's voice from KLCC radio, where he has hosted
The
Saturday Cafe for ten years. "I love folk music for the
stories," he says, "and the characters often find their way
into my sculptures. Doing radio keeps me current with the new
music that's out there."
The
characters of Gosar’s often develop from songs, folk tales and
stories. "A character will catch in my imagination, and the
I'll have to capture them in clay. It's magical, as they become
figures and develop their own personalities."
Gosar
also acknowledges his influences in the pottery world. One of the
pieces in the show is a tribute to Japanese potter Shoji Hamada, who
with Englishman Bernard Leach was largely responsible the resurgence of
interest in folk and craft pottery in the 20th century.
"Without Leach and Hamada, the Saturday Market would be half its
size. They inspired a pottery-making revival." SHOJI
AT THE WHEEL, shows Hamada throwing tea bowls at his
Korean-style wheel, captured with grace and humor by Gosar.

SURFACE: canvas/board New paintings by portfolio artists of the Alder
Gallery will start off our year. Works
on canvas is the most commonly recognized form of painting, and has been
around since the 1500’s. Artists
often prepare the surface, known as the ground, to make their medium
achieve a certain surface patina or drama in a manor of their style.
Some of the earliest paintings were done for the church on wood
panels, which are often referred to as board.
Today’s artists have many more conveniences. Canvas can be
purchased already stretched and primed and one can purchase canvas glued
to board or primed board. Paints come in a tube whereas past artists
would have had assistants to grind and mix colors from stones, minerals
and other organic materials.

There will be a wide range use of mediums and styles to explore.
The criteria for the show is restricted by size.
All artwork must not exceed 10” in any direction, not including
mating, framing or a base. This
makes the show a wonderful opportunity for the experienced as well as
the novice collector. The
small format offers a unique and intimate visual experience.
There is a very special spark evoked by smaller artworks, perhaps
owing to the fact that the viewer has to be engaged with the artwork up
close. Small work is an
excellent way to start or add to your collection, often more affordable
and it’s exciting to place and discover small treasures in your home
or office environment.
We are kicking off the Coburg Holiday Open House with a
reception for Mike Pease, painter and Jewelry Artist Christine
Sundt, Friday November 17th, 5 – 8pm.
Mike Pease will show new landscapes of the Northwest as well as
some urban Eugene Scenes using watercolor, colored pencil and pencil.
Christine Sundt will be offering a range of things from rings and
earrings to neckpieces, from
highly polished and complex to simple and whimsical.
Be sure to look for her unique way of incorporating pearls and
faceted stones in many of her works.
