Mike Plane was born in Durban, South Africa in 1975. At an early age his family moved to Australia, then rural Pennsylvania a few years later. Mike began experimenting with glass in 1994 while working as a chef in Vermont. In 1998 he began an 18-month apprenticeship with Gallagher glass, learning off-hand glass while maintaining his flameworking studio. Mike is now located in Eugene, Oregon where he is theDirector of Operations at the Eugene Glass School.
Experimenting with surface texture and luminosity are only aspects of what occupies the mind of glass artist Mike Plane. From his early youth in South Africa and Australia, he pulls a feel for international art and patterning as he explores the boundaries of just what glass is supposed to look like.
"I strive to reach the point where I absorb all about glass and life that surrounds me and allow myself to incorporate and infuse into an art that can encompass my growing desire for expression."
